Woman Dies After Vehicle Was Driven Into West Boggs Lake Another Woman Arrested

(LOOGOOTEE) - A Loogootee woman was arrested after she drove her vehicle into West Boggs Lake Thursday night.

Police arrested Heather Christmas on two counts of driving while intoxicated or drugs and one count of negligent homicide. Police say she had a blood-alcohol content of .25 percent.

She was transported to Daviess County Community Hospital for treatment of injuries and placed under arrest upon her release.

According to a Daviess County Sheriff's Department report, officers received a call around 8:30 p.m. reporting a vehicle was submerged in the lake near County Road 1200 East, just south of County Road 500 North, also known as St. Mary's Road.

When police arrived they found one person still inside the 2005 Ford Taurus and immediately entered the water and pulled 62-year-old Joyce D. Christmas of Loogootee, out of the vehicle.

She was taken to Daviess Community Hospital where she pronounced dead. Joyce was an employee of Buehler's Buy-Low grocery deli in Loogootee.

While the accident is still under investigation by Indiana State Police Reconstructionists, the sheriff's department says the Ford Taurus that was traveling north on CR 1200E when for an unknown reason, where the road narrows, the car left the roadway, striking multiple cable barriers before going down an embankment and into West Boggs Lake.

Assisting at the scene were Indiana State Police, Loogootee Police, Southwest Medical, Martin County EMS, Montgomery and Cannelburg Volunteer Fire Departments, Loogootee Fire Department, and Odon/Madiosn Volunteer Fire Department.
